Success Story

As a second-generation Far Rockaway Hatzalah member, Rabbi Boruch Bender is not new to the concept of having someone's life put in his hands. "But, when that life is the life of your own child, sitting on your lap in your own home, it's an entirely different experience" says Boruch."

It was Friday afternoon and 4-year old Menachem Bender was enjoying some Pre-Shabbos potato kugel and turkey, when suddenly his face began to turn colors. Little Menachem was gasping for air. He was choking, but fortunately for him, he could not have been in better hands.

Boruch immediately began to deliver steady back blows with one hand, while radioing his fellow comrades for backup with the other. Joined by veteran Hatzalah member, Mr. Wolkowitz, Boruch continued to administer the steady "Heimlich Maneuver" pounding, until the airflow passage was completely cleared.

Little Menachem Bender was breathing again!

Looking back, Rabbi Bender reflects. "It was amazing to see how in less than 45 seconds my house was teeming with qualified, trained personnel, who are capable of saving lives. Fortunately in this case, we were able to turn it into a L'chaim celebration". "It gives you a new appreciation for this valuable asset that our community is fortunate to have."
